Transitional Period

Over the last week, the puppies have entered a new stage in their developmental milestones. The 'Transitional Period' as it is called is characterized by increased sight, hearing, and motor development.

The puppies world is opening up and they will begin to investigate their surroundings, which up to now they have not concerned themselves.  It is important during this stage to continue to handle the puppies, and give them short periods of time away from the litter, to build their confidence and independence.

The first sign of this change occurred at day 10 when the first of the pups,  began to show signs that his eyes were opening.  Between day 10-15 the pups have slowly been opening their eyes.  Now all the pups have their eyes open but their eyesight is still developing.  Studies have indicated that it is not until 28 days that the puppies will be clearly able to distinguish forms.  At this point the pups vision is blurred and fuzzy.

As their eye sight improves their motor skills are also making major advancements.  Just recently they have developed the coordination to climb over a 2 inch lip in the door way of our puppy pen. They now have periods where they will wrestle and play with one another.  Within a few more days I will begin early litter training for the puppies.   There are so many new milestones that are taking place for the puppies at this time.  It is so fun to share watch them and share it with you.
